Marbled White

The Marbled White has some lovely delicate but striking markings which can not be confused with other British butterfly species, the males are being brighter than the females.  They have a wingspan of about 55mm, with the females being slightly larger than the male.  It is found in central England and many areas further south down through to the southern coast where it is quite common.  Indeed, where it is found it is often easy to find in one of the many local colonies which are usually on unimproved grassland.  It has a relatively long flying period from June through to late August.

I have several colonies within easy drive and as such often go out looking for these lovely butterflies, they look particularly good in the late evening and morning light when they are roosting in the grass.
