Brimstone

The Brimstone is one of the first butterflies that is seen each year. It has lovely delicate colours.  It is a reasonably common British butterfly that is found in Yorkshire and most areas to the south, it is also common in Europe.  Brimstones are nomadic butterflies and often fly around quite large areas in search of Blackthorn which is heir food plant.  they can be quite "flighty" and can be difficult to get close enough to for photography.

Although the Brimstone is seen a lot more frequently during the summer months, It is one of a handful of British butterflies that can be seen almost all year year round.  It hibernates over the winter months and emerges in February but can sometimes be seen earlier in warmer weather.  The Brimstone is also one of several butterfly species that virtually never rests with it's wings open.
