Large Skipper

These large Skipper pictures were taken at Ferymn Woods, Northamptonshire on a windy July day in 2008.  Fermyn Woods this is one of the top sites for Purple Emperor and White Admiral in the UK.  I saw both, but I was pleased to also get these pictures of Large Skipper which were reasonably common in the woods.

The Large Skipper is not a "large" butterfly, indeed it has a wingspan of 34 mm which is still small compared to other butterflies but it is 10 mm larger than the Lulworth Skipper.

It is also the most widespread of British Skippers in terms of geographic location where it can be found in most of England and Wales as well as southern Scotland.
