Duke of Burgundy

These pictures were taken in May 2008, when I spent a day with my friend Roger Wasley targeting some of Gloucestershire's spring butterflies.

The Duke of Burgundy was by far the rarest of the 12 species we saw during the day.

It's hard to tell exactly how many Dukes we managed to see on site as they were flying about quite a bit, but I guess it was about 4.

These were all seen at the same site, which was Edge Common near Painswick in Gloucestershire which is also a good site for Dingy Skipper.

It was too windy for any great pictures, but we had a great day seeing a total of 12 species during the day.  Thanks to my friend Roger for his expert butterfly finding and identification skills.

Roger has written a book "butterfly walks of Gloucestershire (to celebrate Butterfly Conservations 40th anniversary)
I hope to visit more of these sites and have more details of the book online soon.
