Comma

 
The Comma butterfly is common butterfly and it is always good to see one flying or perched with it's unique scalloped sides that look good when viewed both from the side and direct from the front.
 
 
 
This Comma had it's picture taken at Ballard Down near Swanage in Dorset in July 2008

The detail of the butterflies tongue (shown right) is a direct close up crop of the above picture designed to show how all butterflies curl up their tongues which are very long and then used for feeding on nectar in food plants such as this thistle head.

 
The Comma pictures below was photographed in Ferymn Woods, Northamptonshire also in July 2008 while looking for the rarer butterfly species of Purple Emperor and White Admiral.  Below is another photographed in Nottinghamshire in late September 2007.  The Comma is on the wing for quite a long period each year.
