I was pleased to see and take these pictures of the
Early Spider Orchid in April 2009 on a visit to
Kent.
Samphire Hoe in Kent, is a great place to see these
orchids which are classed as "nationally scarce".
Although they are only found at a single figure
number of sites in the UK, at Samphire Hoe, over
75,000 of these rare Orchid's flowered in 2008.
They flower from late April
and during May and on my visit there were well over
a thousand of these on the chalky and grass.
They are just 5 - 20 cm tall and are quite difficult
to photograph in the breeze from the English
Channel.
Indeed Sampire Hoe which was only created from the
chalk that was excavated from the Channel Tunnel is
probably one of the best and most reliable sites for
this the first British Orchid to flower.
It's well worth a visit.
It is also a good place for Whitethroats, and many
butterflies.
during our visit we saw:
Large White,
Orange Tip,
Holly Blue,
Small Heath. |
