British Sparrow's

Although in decline, it is easy to view and photograph these two relatively common species of British Sparrow.

White-crowned Sparrow

the famous "Cley Sparrow"

White-crowned Sparrow can hardly be called a "British Bird" but as there has been a handful of sightings in Britain and Ireland over the years, it is on the "British List" and as such is a very rare bird in Britain.
In January 2008 a White-crowned Sparrow has been in the Norfolk birding hotspot of Cley and has received a lot of interest both from bird watchers and the national press.

Like many people I don't like the circus of a national rarity.  As such I decided not to go and look for this bird during the first few weeks after this bird was first reported when there would be between 250 to 2500 people out trying to view this bird each day.

Therefore I waited for the fuss to die down a little (and take the chance that the bird would not stay around).  This resulted that when I went, there was around 20 people viewing.

This was a small bird for photographic purposes and it was a windy day and the view was far from perfect, however I got a few record shots.

The bird was among a small flock of other birds such as Chaffinches, Greenfinches, House Sparrows, and Blackbirds, this picture shows it's size in comparison with a Blackbird.
