Cader Idris

one of Wales's finest,
especially if the Cwn Cau horseshoe is followed"

I have climbed "Cader" several times dating back to the early 1980's, however I have not visited either this mountain or this area as much as I would like.  Indeed my visit in April 2004 was my first visit with a digital camera

the route I completed was the horseshoe route
often called "the Cwm Cau Circuit"

it is 13 km (8 miles) long and is 950 m (3100 feet) of ascent

it ascends three peaks
Mynydd Pencoed - 798m
Pen y Gadair - 893m (Cader Idris)
Mynydd Moel - 855m

starting to gain some height on the first peak Mynydd Pencoed - 798m
as the peaks (and the view down)
kept coming in & out of the mist

the seaside is visible here (only just) Cader is one of the best peaks in Wales for coastal views when there is no cloud and the skies are blue

two had even walked up especially to complete the classic horseshoe on their birthday - they were celebrating a combined age of over 100

descending from Cader towards the next peak of Mynydd Moel - 855m

Another nearby peak is Maeglase (674 meters) one Sunday in April 2004 to complete a fine week ends walking having climbed Cader on the Saturday

the route starts at Ffridd Gulcwm farm just off the A470 road a couple of Km north of Dinas Mawddwy

It is a circular walk on good paths an passes a spectacular waterfall over the craig Maeglase crag before the gradual ascent to the summit.
