Skye

As good as it gets

getting there
& where to stay

no pictures of ferry or bridge
(not going to get involved in that one)

The camp site at Silachan
surrounded by
so many famous peaks
,
and only 100 meters from the famous
Sliachan Inn

there is also a good camp site at
Glen Brittle at the other end of the ridge

with two other climbs below this,
it's over 1000 feet to the ground
made famous in the film "Highlander"

Bla Blaven

often overlooked by climbers visiting the main ridge

the Glach
Glas ridge

blaven-02.jpg (12696 bytes)
superb buttress
climbing

the route requires
a good head for heights
over mixed scrambling
blaven-03.jpg (19663 bytes)
lots of exposure
with some tricky moves
blaven-04.jpg (15449 bytes)

a very worthwhile
summit and at 3044 feet
certainly lots more than
just another Munro

rewarded by the view,
most of the famous Cullin
ridge can be seen

so the background is Sky not Skye
but these things happen

The
Cullin
Ridge

# six miles long
# 10,000 feet of Ascent
# a walk graded as a
"very difficult" rock climb

But more importantly
without any doubt the best ridge
in the whole British Isles

skye-3.jpg (21233 bytes)

the view from Gas-bhein, The small hills
on the Island of Soay rise above the clouds
,
"taken about 8pm having just finished the ridge"
and below Gas-bhein summit

ridge-end.jpg (18350 bytes)

the 14 peaks
on the ridge are both tops and Munros, the main summits are :

Sgur nan Gillean
Am Bhasteir
Bruaach na Frithe
Bidean Druim nan Ramk
Sgurr a' Mhadaidh
Sgurr a' Ghreadaidh
Sgur na Banachdich
Inaccessible Pinnacle
Sgurr Mhic Coinnich
Sgurr Alasdair
Sgurr Sgumain
Sgurr Dhubh
Sgurr nan Eag
Gas-bhein

there are lots of extra high points on the ridge such as :
The Bhasteir Tooth
(at 3000 feet exactly the tooth is the lowest of the official "tops" - but possibly one of the most dramatic)

in-pin-1.jpg (19876 bytes) in-pin-2.jpg (19644 bytes)
roughly at mid distance along the ridge is

The Inaccessible Pinnacle

its top is at 3235 feet, is often thought as the hardest Munro to ascend for the non climber to reach

it is however a very good peak, certainly well worth the climb wether or not you are Munro collecting

The In Pin as it is called is a climb to its top via one of two routes

the longest ridge is the easiest at "Moderate" and is very easy and very exposed (the way I went up)

the shorter side is "Difficult" (and is the way I abseiled down)
you can climb either route but it is best to abseil down the shorter steep pitch.
