The Munro's

there are 284
Munro's in Scotland

these are mountains
over 3000 feet.

the Munro's are famous the world over, although small in height in global mountain terms, most are well worth a day out

The latest revision was in 1997 see below

The exact nature of the height measuring system is open to debate with the height drop between them and neighbouring hills always being controversial.
Sir Hugh made his original list on the belief that each Munro was a separate mountain.
The controversy being - What is a separate mountain? or just a subsidiary top?

The Munros have survived metrication with the "magic" number being 914.4 metres.
The number of mountain in England and Wales that reach this height is 18,
however some would only be classed as subsidiary tops.
the controversy : how many Munro's should there be ?

shortly after the original list was published the OS revised the maps and the controversy over number of Munro's began. Munro began a revised list but died in 1919 before completion.
Since then the list has been regularly updated as measuring techniques change

as stated above the current list was published in 1997, it included 8 additions and 1 demotion.
the previous revision was in 1981 with over 11 changes.

1997 changes

when Sir Hugh published his original list, it contained 283 Mountains and other peaks that did not "qualify" as they did not have enough re-assent these were classed as "tops"

the total number of Munro's and tops was 530 on the original list)
