The Munro's

there are 284 Munro's in Scotland,

"so how many ave u dun mister?"

below is a brief summary of Munro's I have so far managed

climbing the Munro's

how many Munro's have I climbed ?

a very good question, I don't actually know the answer.

Sounds Strange !!

During the many years that I have been mountaineering in Scotland, I have visited nearly all of the Glencoe and outlying summits including, Munro's, tops, etc.
But I did not actually list them.

In 1991 ~ I completed my winter ML training
in the Cairngorms, during the week we visited many Munro's but again
I do not have them listed.

vorlich-5.jpg (13436 bytes) most of the Munro's are not "household" names even in mountaineering
indeed I guess most mountaineers could probably only name about 50 Munro's
unless they were particularly interested in Munro's

I have climbed around 130 probably more

1983
I started walking in mountain areas in 1980 and first went walking in Scotland in 1983.  My first Munro was during this visit when I climbed Buachaille Etive Mor in good snow during a winter meet of the Wellingborough mountaineering club in Glencoe.

By the end of the week I had completed another half a dozen Munro's in Glencoe and the two on the Ben Nevis range.

1984 - 1989
I continued my visits to Scotland mostly to Glencoe in winter where I slowly added more to the list but many mostly time was spent snow and ice climbing.
I went to the same area in 1986 where several of the Mamore peaks were completed in summer walks. In 1997 I went to Skye and completed all the 11 Munro's on the Cuillin hills

 Skye's Cullin ridge
one of if not the most a spectacular mountain area in the British Isles

however by the time we reached the 1990's
I had only climbed about 30 separate Munro's, however most of these I had climbed at least twice and many of them I had climbed at least half a dozen times.

1990 - 1995
I did not add many new Munro's to my list as again there were more visits to Glencoe.
In 1991 I did my Winter ML training in the Cairngorms but I did not take notes of what peaks we climbed.
I did a 6 week trip to Africa and a 5 week trip to America so my leave was being used elsewhere

in 1996 ~ I climbed only one new Munro
again all other
Munro's climbed in 1996,
I had climbed before.

in 1997 ~ I climbed 10 Munro's
9 for the first time, in two visits to Scotland

It was around this time I thought about actually trying to complete them all
the main reasoning behind this is that to complete them all you visit many new areas of Scotland that you would not normally visit.  This appealed, although I still did not make a conscious decision to complete then all.  I did take the decision to keep a list of those I completed along with the date and whom I walked with.

in 1998 ~ I climbed 7 new Munros
in three trips.

in 1999 ~ I have climbed 33 new Munros
7 during Easter,
12 in June / July
12 in August
and 3 in October
including one Munro that I had climbed before (Ben Lawers)

2000 ~ I climbed not as many as I had hoped, with around 30 during the year

but the list grew by over 60 in two years
by visiting new areas

2001 ~ sadly no Munro's climbed

in 2002 ~ I climbed just 4 Munro's

the completions list is slowing

2003 is better
I went to Mull for a week in May and climbed Ben More
and over a 20 day trip in Aug / Sept I climbed 26 Munro's (24 of which were new) including the six in "the great Wilderness", 3 in the Fannaichs, 5 near Ullapool,
and 12 in Glen Sheil

my target for 2004 is 30 new Munro's
I climbed 8 in Feb 2004
of which 2 were new
and 11 in April / May of which 10 were new

the long ridges

I have not completed the two "big ridges" in Glen Sheil
"the five sisters and the south the south Glen Sheil ridge"

where I would complete 13 Munro's in just two outings
6 on the five sisters!
and there are 7 on the south ridge

the easy three

I have completed the easy three peaks in Glenshee

where three Munro's can be completed in just three hours

Carn Aosda
The Cairnwell
Cairn a' Gheoidh

which is the hardest Munro to ascend ?

I have climbed the
 Inaccessible Pinnacle
at 3235 Feet

it is often thought of as the hardest Munro to ascend for the non climber

which is the most remote Munro ?

the two Munro's in "the great wilderness"
Ruadh Stac Mor & A'Mhaighdean
are generally accepted as the most remote

I completed these two in September 2003

which Munro shall I climb last ?

I am not sure

many people climb Ben More on Mull as their last Munro

however
I have already completed Ben More
in 2003

sometimes
Ben Nevis, Ben Lomond or Ben Hope is chose but I have also climbed all these three
