the "Ullapool hills"
a group of often underestimated hills that offer good walking
there are 6 Munro's to the east of Ullapool, Beinn Dearg, Am Faochagach, etc. as well as many hills of lower height, collectively these are known as "the Ullapool hills". None of these hills could be described as spectacular, but they are all worthwhile and enjoyable

Beinn Dearg Horseshoe we ascended 4 Munros
Beinn Dearg - 1084 m ~ we started the walk from the forestry land following a good path which gave good height gain through both the forrest and the open land beyond until we reached the lochan. from the lochan we ascended the three peaks before walking north to take in Eiddh nan Clach Geala on the way back. |

the route we took was - we started at the car park at Inverlael on the A835 map - O/S sheet 41 distance - 28 KM ascent - approximately 1400m time - 9 hours |

Am Faochagach 954 meters ~ 3130 feet this Munro is described as "a boring rounded hill" or other similar comments in most guide books. However the best way to approach an ascent of this hill is to go on a fine dry day as the views from it's rounded summit ridge make it all worthwhile.

![]() there is a river crossing soon after the start so a dry day (after several other dry days) makes this easier. In deed for our ascent we had had a long dry summer and the river was little more than an easy stream although the guide book says it can be very tricky |
