Cross Fell
a not so often visited Pennine peak

Cross Fell is 893m high
which at 2970 feet is one of top ten peaks in England according to height

add pic Cross Fell just fails to reach 3000 feet.
no doubt it would be both more popular and receive more ascents if it was just 30 feet higher

during the great heat wave in Aug 2003 I ascended Cross fell and Three other "Pennine Way Peaks" as we walked North from Dufton
it was a very long day as the heat was so extreme.  The following day was the hottest day ever recorded in England at 100F.

the Peaks were
Knock Old Man : 794 meters
Great Dunn Fell : 847 meters
Little Dunn Fell : 842 meters
before Cross Fell 893 meters
before descending over Wildboar Scar and down into Milburn

Knock Old Man : 794 meters
Great Dunn Fell : 847 meters is visible for many miles with its masts & "golf ball" covering some of Britain's defence equipment
The road up to Great Dunn Fell is said to be England's highest road

Little Dunn Fell : 842 meters

Cross Fell 893 meters

Cross Fell is the highest point on the Pennine Way and is also the highest point in England outside of The Lake District
the 3000 feet peaks are Scafell Pike, Scafell, Hellvellyn and Skidaw
the higher peaks between Cross fell and 3000 feet are Great End, Bowfell, Great Gable

I first climbed Cross Fell back in 1980,
long before the days of digital cameras or web sites,
as a result I have scanned two prints (these have already been copied from slides)

I completed Cross Fell as part of a 16 day crossing of the Pennine Way
