from
Haweswater to Grisedale tarn

and back !!

a two day back packing walk across the high peaks of Eastern Lakeland

21 & 22 June 2003

Day 1

the walk started at Haweswater reservoir at the car park at the southern tip.  the reason we picked this was because it was close to the motorway

allthough it looks dull in the picture it was a good and not to hot for back packing

we started by walking clockwise around Haweswater a couple of Km.

past the path to Rough Crag and the RSPB hide for viewing the crag.  It is the only place south of  Scotland where golden eagles nest

then followed the "coast to coast" long distance path over our first peak which was Kidsty Pike

our next peak was the short distance to
"The Knott"

pic soon

we then passed several crags and minor peaks on the long walk down to Angle Tarn

 continuing in a north-west direction
to the small village of Rooking
and down to Patterdale

cross the road and the long ascent of St. Sunday crag with an easy start though some fields

looking back towards Ullswater

the summit of St. Sunday is 841 meters
which is a long pull with over 700 meters of ascent from Patterdale
as the pictures both above and below show

a good profile
of the long steep angle

finally we reached the summit
the view made it worth while

good views down towards
Grisedale Tarn & surrounding peaks
