from
Buttermere to Stair
across the tops

a walk across the high peaks West of Derwent water
in fresh spring snow

the walk was with the Leicestershire Mountain Leaders Association

the walk started just north of Buttermere and was a slog uphill in poor weather poor visibility and poor path. the camera did not leave the the rucksack until lunchtime.

Lunch was late and in the small amount of shelter we found at Hopegill Head

just below the summit of Hopegill Head 770 meters

Navigation was at best tricky

the summit of sand Hill at 756 meters

certainly more snow than sand

the classic white out situation

using both
new and traditional
navigation techniques

 keeping warm or navigating ?

approaching Crag Hill via a rounded ridge that was very exposed to the weather
the summit of Craig Hill - 839 meters, the highest point on the walk
another view of Crag Head trig point, from this point the weather gradually started to improve for the rest of the day.

pictured is Alistair who was the main navigator for the day.

the weather was changing by the moment from reasonable to wind, no visibility, and lots of spindrift
a typical shot of the amount of view and visibility

the picture was actually taken near to the top of Sail 773 meters

approaching the saddle between Sail and Causey Pike

the cloud level had by now increased by around 500 more feet  giving better views for the last hour of the high ground

we even had momements of sunshine

two shots of Causey Pike - 637 meters

Mardale Ill Bell
an awarkward chimney to descend

the cloud lifted as we dropped more height towards the small peak on the end of the ridge

Rowling End
at 433 meters

looking across over
Outerside towards
Skidaw, Lower Man
and Blencathra

starting at
Beck house
just north of Buttermere
on the B5289

finishing at
Stair
