Rock Climbing
in the
South of England

go - climb south

In the south !!!
you have
my home area of
Northamptonshire
and my neighboring county
Leicestershire

As I said on the Peak District page
"The peak district is not
my favourite place to climb,
but as it is easiest the closest climbing to my home,
over the years,

I have climbed here more than anywhere else"

I also said on the Peak District page
"This is not entirely true, as there is climbing in Leicestershire, and even in Northamptonshire if you count climbing on old Railway bridges & sidings.
The quality of this climbing can only be described as "climbing not at its best"

Indeed its still true that I have climbed lots more in the Peaks than in Leicestershire and Northamptonshire, but these are something to do "now and then on a summers evening"

Cordee even produce a guide for the area and logically enough call it "Leicestershire Climbs"

A few Leicestershire crags are featured below
The list will increase
as I visit more crags with my camera
including Markfield etc.

climbs In
Northamptonshire

in Northamptonshire, no one would recommend Finedon slabs but a few feet of old concrete sidings is better than nothing !!
JUST and ONLY JUST

Climbs In
Leicestershire

Well where do you actually go, if you want to climb here ?

Amongst the better climbing in Leicestershire :
Markfield
Outwoods Crag
Old John

the other railway bridge is Slawston bridge in Leicestershire, and is used much more Finedon.
The guide book says this is one of the shortest to walk in around, but what this actually means is take care not to be run over !!!

The crag with the biggest amount of area and therefore climbing is Markfield Quarry (disused)
at O/S SK 486 104, also on map 129

Outwoods Crag

out of all the mentioned "sites",
Outwoods is a natural crag
it also has some of the best routes.

Outwoods crag is at O/S ref. SK 514 167
on OS landranger map 129

certainly enough for an evening
you can climb about six routes of about 8m each in about 2 1/2 hours

where is your helmet sunshine ?
no funny comments please
Outwoods on edge !
I really must turn this picture
the right way up

they lock the gates on time and sometimes you need to "break out"
to escape home !

The crag with the biggest amount of area and therefore climbing is / was
Markfield Quarry (disused)

at O/S SK 486 104, also on map 129

However times have changed in that there is a large face topped with barbed wire covering all the climbs around the pool.

The climbs on the two other buttresses (including the buttress below are unaffected)
