DoE award

Duke of Edingburgh Award

I am involved with the DoE award scheme with Scouts
and Northamptonshire County Council Youth Services.

In the past years I have worked with young people doing DoE expeditions
on Bronze, Silver and Gold standard.
Using venues such as Long Myndd, The Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, and Glencoe
many of expeditions have pictures on this site

BELA

I tutor people for nationally recognised qualifications, this is mostly for the
Basic Expedition Leaders Award for the CCPR.
It involves assessing the suitability of youth leaders to lead their own mountain activities within the requirements of a nationally recognised qualifications.

The BELA has taken over from the BETA where "Training" became "Leader"
with more emphasis on the leadership skills needed to run a group safely.
I have tutored many subjects at BELA level over the years, including Planning and Preparation,

Safety & Emergency, conservation & Access, and Navigation.

I usually cover Navigation for Northamptonshire County Council ~ Youth Services
~ BELA courses run at Grendon Hall Centre, Northamptonshire

Night Navigation

Again pictures from BELA training are amongst the training pictures on this site
including  night navigation pictures
on the Long Mynd in Shropshire, during a BELA Practical training week end.

Mountain Activity Training

As well as the training mentioned above, I also run independent activity training, in mountaineering and rock climbing.  I have not individually categorised these events but have included these with other pictures on this site.
I also run refresher training for students looking for a cheap weekend of practice before their summer MLTB assessment. The popular aspect of these seems to be "Security on Steep Ground"

A few pictures of Nigel's activity training
are to be found on line,
including climbing wall training

another aspect of mountain training that I frequently get asked to complete is
"security on steep ground"

this is NOT rock climbing but how to use a rope safely in a mountain walking situation
