This site was made using

This site was produced using Microsoft Front Page 98,  I started using Front Page Express  but soon upgraded to FrontPage so as to make full use of the extra facilities.  During March 2000, I upgraded to Frontpage 2000.
I have found FrontPage an easy programme to use and have used it "self taught".
I also needed to change from Express as I needed a spell checker, there is no way I would produce anything without a spell checker. I think even now a few words might have got through the net. (no pun intended)

Photographs

All mountain and wildlife photographs were taken by the author using both "conventional" and digital cameras.  The exception to this is the pictures on the Everest page, as I have not yet visited Nepal or Tibet.

Pictures were taken on a variety of SLR's as well as compact cameras. The digital camera I use is a Epsom PC600 that although essentially a compact camera, I am very pleased with. As of Dec 2000 I upgraded my digital camera to a Olympus Camedia C2020 as this has a more powerfull digital zoom as well as a good optical zoom. It also has a small movie programme and generally more features. As a standard I use several memory chips and take many pictures preferring to delete as needed rather than not have enough memory to take that shot, therefore I carry around 100 mb of cards at any time (I found this was more than ample for a ten day tour of India.

I have had the digital camera since Feb 1998, and am waiting for technology to really take off.  What would be better than a camera that produced a set of digital images, a set of slides and a set of prints all in one go, or at least a button that let you switch between options or multiple options as the situation allowed !!!

Where the pictures were originally transparencies, I had them commercially transferred to Kodak PCDs, I then edited the images using Corel draw 8, they were then converted to JPEG format, before publishing on my site.  Only a few images are from prints, where these were used I had them scanned by a friend.

mountain pictures on this site

the Chamonix area of the French Alps

why are so many pictures duplicated on different pages on this site ?

The initial reason was :
my service provider allows only 10 Mb of web space
(this is common to many providers)

when each picture is up-loaded onto this space, it eats into that space.
It then uses the same amount of space however many times it is used, thus allowing multiple uses at no extra "cost"

however since this, I have changed terms and conditions and now have unlimited web space.
I still think its worth using reasonable pictures more than once when they support the message of the page.

I have tried to size pictures to the same size as I actually used them on the site. This adds to the speed of loading, however it is not always possible and some pages (e.g. safari pictures) take a long while to load..
I found that by sizing pictures to a reasonably small size you can get many images on your web space.

Most mountain and wildlife images are therefore between 12 & 25 kb big.  I feel this is essential if you wish to get 1500 pictures on to 250 pages (many pictures being used on more than one page) and still get reasonably fast loading times.
The initial reason for picture size was due to overall web size, when I first started the site I was limmited to 10 mb.  The site has grown and luckily so has the amount of space my ISP allows as the site is currently around 22 mb.

[ I realised  1000 pictures during November 1999 ]
I realise that sometime during the year 2000, I will end up with 2000 pictures !! and I expect at least 75% of them will be mountain pictures.

Using digital images gives the scope for

jumping between Adam and Eve (at 2885 bytes)

to become

still jumping between Adam and Eve (at 14678 bytes)

perhaps you like the original best ???

but I have had a few people ask me how I achieved the manipulated image, I suppose I should have said
" I only jump from Adam to Eve when the conditions are interesting photographically"

Counter

I installed a counter after about a month online, therefore the number viewing the site is not 100 % accurate, as time marches on, the counter will give me a more reflection on the number of hits.

The number was very slow at first and took several months before it reached 100.
It only took around another six weeks to reach the 200 number which was achieved during the last few days in July 1999.

I reached 300 on 8 September 1999
400 by the end of October
500 in Nov, 600 in Dec, 700 in Jan 2000
but as hits increase both 800 & 900 in Feb 2000
I achieved 1000 on 13 March 2000.  Under one year after the site has been online.

At present time I get about 30 - 70 hits a week and would (like any other site designer) obviously like to increase this figure.

Notes on Viewing

The site being image-intensive, is best viewed using a fast modem, however it is possible to view using a slower modem, but please be patient.

I have visited the site using both Internet Explorer, and with Netscape Navigator, but the site is a relatively new one and patience may be needed.  I have experienced problems both attaching and downloading the attachments so know this area needs more work
