Buying old maps
If I had
£1000 spare
(I can only wish)
to spend on
antique map
what would I spend it on ??
well pictured below is a very strong contender

This map is by Martin Waldeseemuller, an Italian and is dated around 1520, it was carved onto a wooden block before printing the map is drawn in Ptolemic view (now widely regarded as obsolete as most modern maps are drawn in Mercator's projection) Mercator devised a system that allowed latitude & longitude to be drawn square, thus eliminating the map being more narrow at the top than at the bottom the Fact that Scotland is drawn pointing West to East is due to Survey errors, just as interesting but not so obviously evident is that the errors are magnified by the placing of Ireland so far North. the surveying for this the famous early shape of Britain took place during 1470's |
If I had £20,000
(I can only continue to play
the lottery
and hope my six numbers come up)
to spend on antique map
what would I spend it on ??
well below is what I would
make an offer for
even though its priced at £21,000
