visualising a location
on a map

a typical map section showing path junctions

when ever you can have your own map

another worthwhile and interesting navigation exercise is

the visualisation of points on a map

to make this exercise

plan a short walk, then produce a route card for it.  Go out and take photographs of the checkpoints on your route card, including the start and finish points.

Use either a full size map of the area or small areas around each check point that have been cut out and stuck to card.

Give each student the map(s) photographs, and route card and the match them.

Aber falls, Snowdonia

an easy example of this would be
for a student to find this waterfall on a map of the carneddau.

The waterfall is not marked by a symbol
but the river is marked,
and the words "Aber Falls"
appear on both the
1~ 50000 and the 1 ~ 25000
scale maps
