an Orienteering prminant marker at Irchester country park

I often use Ircester country park for training many different aspects of navigation,
these include :

navigating the perminent orienteering course, accompanied walks, night navigation, etc.

Indoor sessions using Irchester Country Park as the theme

I also use Irchester for indoor theory sessions, I have taken photographs of the area and have stuck them onto card and laminated them.

I have done the same thing with both O/S and orienteering signs.

Also with descriptions of signs.

I have then taken an orienteering map of the area and cut out a small area around the photograph and mounted this to.

The idea is to match the items

With orienteering maps costing £1, a set of prints aprox. £5, symbol cards £5 (or draw your own)
card £2 for a couple of sheets if you do not already have some.

The completed exercise costs around £7 to £14, depending what you already have and how much you want to draw yourself or purchase pre-pared.

A path at Irchester CP

you should know this symbol and an example

for this path

another idea on the same theme is to plan a short walk, then produce a route card for it.

go out and take photographs of the checkpoints on your route card, and the start and finish points.

use either a full size map of the area or small areas around each check point that have been cut out and stuck to card

give each student the map(s) photographs, and route card and the match them.
