Mountain Heights

This is far from a complete list of what is available for those that like list ticking,
that would fill either a very large book or a commercial web site, or both
and many books and web sites are devoted to just this
certainly not a small home page.
However I have added a few attainable and non attainable lists.

For a small list of lists    !!!
where do you start   ???

Well I will start with The British Isles

In the UK the famous lists are

# The munro's

The mountains that rise to 3000 feet in Scotland
(using quite strict measurement techniques)

Munro list

general Munro page for pictures

Skye, often said by mainy to be the best mountaineering in the UK

the Cullin ridge
~
14 mountains on one ridge
~
11 of which are Munro's

# The Welsh 3's
At the other end of the scale is the list of fourteen peaks in Snowdonia that reach 3000 feet
People who climb the Welsh 3's generally wish to climb them in a single day.

The 14 peaks of Snowdonia that rise to 3000 feet
is a little more like a list that I have any chance of completing
(my last completion was 16 hours)

the current record is
4 hours 19 minutes & 56 Seconds by Donnelly
& a sheet for you to add your times

Adam & Eve, the summit of Tryfan

the summit of Adam & Eve,
at 3010 feet it is the smallest of the Welsh 3's but arguably the best of them all

The other lists for the UK are in the form of route plans
# A route for the 3 Highest peaks of the UK in a day
well the highest peaks in Scotland, England & Wales
(as opposed to the 3 highest peaks in Scotland - a very different list)
a common walk nowadays
~ more of a test of driving and motorway hold ups than of mountaineering

# A route for the 5 highest peaks in The British Isles
(two very long days???)
this list is as 3 peaks list and includes Ireland & Northern Ireland

the not so famous list is

English 3000 foot Peaks

A small list of the four peaks that reach 3000 feet in England
(also suitable for completion in one day)

As the mountains of Scotland that are 300 feet and over are found on my Munro list and the Welsh 3000 feet mountains are found on the Welsh 3's list,

I thought,
I had better list the 4 mountains in England that also reach 3000 feet.
Just to confuse, I have listed them in meters

Scafell Pike 978 m.
Scafell 964 m.
Helvellyn 950 m.
Skiddaw 931 m.

Helvellyn possibly the most famous mountain in England

the view from the summit of Helvellyn

the ridge on the left
is Squril edge
& the ridge on the right
is Striding edge

# If you want to do something everybody does then try
# The 3 Highest peaks of the UK in a day
well the highest peaks in Scotland, England & Wales
(as opposed to the 3 highest peaks in Scotland

- a very different expedition)
a common walk nowerdays ~ more of a test of driving and motorway hold ups than of mountaineering

# or something very similar but a great deal harder
# a route for the 5 highest peaks in The British Isles

(two very Long Days???)  this list is as 3 peaks list above,
and includes Ireland & Northern Ireland

looking towards Britians highest

the summit of Ben Nevis at 1344 meters
is the highest point on both lists

Further away
I have added the following lists

the worlds 8000 meter peaks

the 8000 'ers

list the extreme

the 14 mountains
in the world that reach
the dizzy height of
8000 metres

Everest the highest of them all

the famous view
of wind and snow
deflected off the summit
of Everest
see my Everest page

the Seven Summits
a list of the highest peak in Each continent

It has become a fashionable feat to climb the heights point in each continent, and it has now been completed over 80 times.  There are several lists of which exact mountains are counted and the table below takes this into consideration, with the added peaks at the end

Continent Mountain Height M. Height Ft Country
Asia Everest 8848 29028 Nepal/Tibet
South America Aconcagua 6956 22835 Argentina
North America McKinley 6194 20320 USA -   (Alaska)
Africa  Kilimanjaro 5895 19340 Tanzania
Europe Elbrus 5636 18481 Russia
(Kabardin Balkar)
Antarctica Vinson 4897 16067 Antarctica

OK so you have noticed there is only six peaks listed

Should there be a highest point in Australia or Australasia ???

Sukarno Peak in Irian Jaya (Indonesia) is the highest point in Australasia
at 4884 metres or 16023 feet it s a HVS rock climb to the top that is Carstensel Pryamid

or should you count New Zealands Mt Cook at 3764 metres which equals 12349 feet

or in Australia its Kosciusko at 2228 metres which is just 7316 feet

certainly not Ayres rock at a height of just 867 metres

there are so many fine mountains in the SE Asia region
where would you class
Kinabalu in Borneo at 4101 metres or
A Gurg in Bali at 3142 metres or
Mt Fuji in Japan at 3776 metres ???

Ok so everyone knows the highest peak in the world is Everest
and its not hard to then work out that the Highest peak outside of the Himalayas is
Aconcagua at 6956
but how high is this in real terms ?

Aconcagua is the 69th highest mountain in the world

kili, an easy trekking peak

on top of Kilimanjaro
one of the Seven summits
listed above

the 4th highest of the Seven
which ever way you count Australia or Australasia

more lists Soon
it could get out of hand
