GPS – just what is it?

It is short for Global Positioning System.

The system is based on a number of satellites orbiting the Earth.

The satellites consistently transmit information regarding location and time in the form of signals.
GPS receivers
then receive these signals and use them to calculate their present position.

There are now enough satellites to provide continuous coverage around the globe.
