GPS
what unit should I choose ?

whilst using a GPS the information you can receive will include as a minimum

current location speed
marking of location
(for return later)
average speed
max speed
heading sunrise & sunset
bearing trip time
elevation trip odomete

as well as many other features

you can also add waypoints (places you want to go to)
you can use the GPS to work out your distance away from the waypoint and the time you would take to reach it if current speeds are maintained

Which unit should I get ?

very much a matter of personal choice and dependant on how much you wish to spend

some of the smaller GPS examples are now small enough to use in the mountains, yet have now become accurate enough for general use.

some have built in antenna and some have the traditional fold up or fixed antenna

the size varies but most units that are suitable for mountain use are under six inches tall and weigh under 200 g

GPS screens can give a simple "route map" and a "compass" type

examples of these right

the actual information included on these screens varies from GPS to GPS.
