GPS

please note

GPS accuracy

a GPS is a useful aid, indeed a GPS is a very very useful aid but it should NOT be relied upon.

The only safe way to navigate in the mountains is using a map and compass, armed with the knowledge and practical experience on how to use them.  (a GPS should be considered as an extra.

Warning

remember this and if you abide with it you will find your GPS is a very useful navigation aid and NOT a potentially dangerous tool!

a GPS will not stop you walking over a cliff edge

a GPS will not guarantee you an accurate location (remember if the location is 10 meters out you could easily walk over a cliff edge )
This is obviously magnified when you have an error of 30+ meters (common when your receiver gets a view of 3 rather than 4 satellites)

a GPS will not tell you where you are if it can not get a "view" of at least three satellites - this is common in wooded areas, ravines, steep valleys, near to cliffs, etc.

a GPS will not tell you where you are if the batteries run out.
