National Parks  ~ did you Know

 

  • First National Park - Yellowstone in the USA, aim to protect unique and important landscapes from development.
  • In 1926 The Council for the Preservation of Rural England established.
  • John Dower published a report in April 1945 on National Parks in the England leading to:
  • The National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act of 1949 recommends establishing National Parks   described as "extensive tracts of beautiful and wild countryside which would provide scope for open-air recreation"
  • In 1951 the first National Parks were established:

Lake District
Peak District
Snowdonia
Dartmoor

  • The statutory obligations of the National Park Authorities are:
  1. To preserve and enhance the natural beauty of the area.
  2. To promote public enjoyment and open-air recreation
  3. To look after the social and economic well being of the resident population.

with only 800,000 visits by people using other forms of transport
this equals 92% by car
