The Matterhorn
4478 meters

The Matterhorn is one of the most recognisable mountains in the world. For this reason alone it is worth having pictures of it here.  It is a mountain that is high on my "hit list" of mountains I want to climb
I have been to Zermatt several times to climb the Matterhorn, but have always been beaten by the weather. Indeed on two occasions no one had climbed the mountain for weeks due to storms and heavy snow ice build high up.  On another occasion I reached the Hornli hut and stopped the night only to find heavy rain & zero visibility the next morning - not a good day for the Matterhorn.

The Matterhorn is 4478 meters high, and is graded at either AD- or PD+ depending which guide you read. the height gain from from the Hornli hut is 1200 meters.

There are not many views of the mountain, on this site, mainly due to the weather,
I can always update after I reach the famous summit.

the many Matterhorn's of the World !!!

Many mountains are nicknamed the Matterhorn for similarities in shape to the famous Swiss mountain, amongst these is Cinict at 690 meters in Wales as a smaller example.

However some bigger mountains have also been nicknamed the Matterhorn amongst these is Shivling 6549 meters and Ama Dablam 6586 meters.

There are however 4 mountains in North America that are actually called Matterhorn, they are in British Columbia, Oregon, Nevada and Colorado.
